Minutes of meeting held on May 5, 2010
Meeting opened at 10:11 a.m. by Chairman Bruce Plumley
PRESENT: COA members: Tom Baltazar, Lowell Nixon, Olive Nixon, Brad Noble, Bruce Plumley, Jack Reed, and Susan Sanders. Others: Senior Center Director Margaret Crock, Manager Don Sanders, Outreach Worker Deb Tierney, COA Alternate Earl Johnson, and Activities Coordinator Linda Artruc.
ABSENT: No absentees.
MINUTES: Motion by Brad, seconded by Tom, to accept the April 2010 minutes was approved.
REPORTS:
OUTREACH WORKER – Debbie Tierney – We have received the grant funding we applied for which is specifically designated for outreach activities. There will be classes in genealogy, yoga, and Tai Chi, a Mah Jongg set, expansion of the stained glass classes, and purchase of equipment such as a treadmill and a recumbent bike. We need to work on oversight, insurance waivers for equipment use, scheduling, sign-in sheets, attendance, and fee policies. There is a waiver available on line to indemnify the Senior Center. It is alright to ask for donations so we can continue to offer these things after initial funds are expended. Without fees we would have to add these costs into future budgets. Request for two large coffee pots was made after the grant was received. To pay
for these, it is possible to amend the grant as long as we don’t delete anything we requested money for. We could reduce the genealogy classes from five to three and use those funds to purchase the pots. • Deb requests that cable notices be updated more frequently, especially as we enter a new phase of Senior Center activities. Earl will ask to have Deb added to the Cable Commission. • Deb would like to attend the Elder Care Conference on May 18, 2010, at a cost of $35.00 plus mileage. • The mailing list has been updated and we have a new database. We will need two new rolodex files to accommodate the 350 names on our list, one for me and one for the Senior Center. • Jan Swenson passed away last week. Consideration is being given to planting a tree in her honor, probably at Town Hall. • Possible future field trips to Overlook and Orchard Valley and perhaps having a restaurant come in and demonstrate some techniques.
Also being considered are courses in creative writing, psychology, and Word/Excel/Access for PCs. Deb suggests the Senior Center be open during evening stained glass class hours for cards and games. Motion by Lowell to accept Deb’s requests to attend the Elder Care Conference with one other person, to purchase two rolodex, and to exchange two sessions of the genealogy classes in order purchase two large coffee pots was carried

In April, 790 contacts were made and 79 seniors were served. 298 attended the Center, 112 attended congregate meals. The balance Includes: Cards & games (77), exercise (27), senior tax work off program (16), intergenerational activities (24), phone calls (86), COA meeting (10), stained glass classes (14), blood pressure clinic (3), crafts (12), entertainment programs (31), meetings and activities (14), DMV (23), garden club and gardening (11), Wal-Mart Vision (10), computers and income tax (22). Thank you to the Nixons for their donation of flowers.
SENIOR TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM: Margaret Crock
As of April 30, 2010, the Senior Center has used the program in the amount of $2,774.00, Town Clerk $496.00, Assessors officer $264.00, Tax office ($462), and Holland Elementary School $2,036.00. Total YTD is $6,192.00.
PROGRAM COMMITTEE: Regular programs: Lunch is served every Monday as well as on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month – reservations, please. Monday Veterans Services Agent at noon – reservations needed; 2nd Monday Mah Jongg at 10:00 a.m., Garden Club at 10:30 a.m.; Tuesday Stained glass classes at 10:30 a.m., craft class at 1:00 p.m., and Garden Club 2nd Tuesday; Wednesday 10:00 a.m. exercise class, and COA meeting on the 1st Wednesday; Thursday 12:30-3:00 p.m. cribbage, and crafts from 1:00-3:00 p.m. with Linda Artruc. Card games, scrabble and puzzles available daily. May 12th at noon Howard Fife to speak about genealogy; May 17th John Root, musician at 12:30; May 26th at 1:00 p.m. fun Bingo; June 2nd 1:00-3:00 p.m. AVADA; June 7th at 11:30 Harrington Outreach mini health fair; July 9th spaghetti dinner by Friends of Holland Seniors; July 23rd from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. American Red Cross blood drive, volunteers needed; July 26th at 12:30 p.m. Laurie Fiesta, a vocalist.
Yoga and Tai Chi instructors have signed up. Times to be arranged.
FINANCIAL: Brad Noble, Treasurer
April report includes: Receipts: GSSSI $630.00, special GSSSI grant of $350.00 and gifts totaling $10.00. Expenditures: Telephone $67.50, postmaster $146.20, printing and mailing newsletter $142.25, lawn care $89.25, exercise classes $135.00, security $75.00, trash pick-up $34.22, Osterman Gas $468.97, National Grid $75.51, exterminator $165.00, and salaries $1,828.85.
MANAGER: Don Sanders - No problems.
Motion by Brad to accept all of the above verbal and printed reports was made and approved by the Council on Aging.
OLD BUSINESS: Minutes of the Friends meeting was distributed. Tom is working on a $3,000.00 grant for a greenhouse. The vegetable garden needs loam. Fifteen yards delivered would cost $300.00. Tom brought up having our Council join the MCOA (MA COA). Brad and Margaret feel we get the information anyway, but always late. After discussion, motion was made by Brad to have Tom join as an individual member for $55.00 was unanimously approved.
NEW BUSINESS: Seniors are invited to a free pancake breakfast at the high school on May 24th from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. • Tom told us the Mah Jongg group would like to have two folding card tables instead of dragging tables from room to room. Motion by Brad to spent $80.00 for two folding card tables was seconded by Jack and unanimously approved. • Tom brought up health concerns caused by the use of Styrofoam cups. • Tom extended thanks to Lowell and Olive for donation 110 clay pots for Garden Club and crafts. • A memo was drafted with names of COA members for reappoint for submission to Selectpersons. • Notice of annual meeting on June 2, 2010, was distributed.
Motion by Brad to adjourn the meeting at 11:28 a.m.
